I had attempted to quit smoking on a number of occasions but had often failed at the first hurdle. I was fully aware that I had to learn from the mistakes and failures of the past to ensure that the next time I attempt to quit will be the last time – due to it being a success.

I decided that I would only try again to stop smoking, when my life was in what I classed as a good period. If I am stressed out for example at work where I sell French doors then I always seem to yearn for a fag. When I am doing well and I am happy, I have far less of a need to smoke, therefore this will be the type of period, when I will start yet again to quit the fags.

I am not sure why I did this but whenever I have tried to quit smoking in the past I have let everyone know what I am attempting to do – family, friends and work colleagues etc. This is a big mistake as to quit it is important that you stop thinking about cigarettes completely. When you are constantly being asked about how you are finding giving up the cigarettes, it is like a constant reminder to you. By going about it in a quiet way, maybe only telling your closest family members and friends, makes it a whole lot easier.

Another reason why I had failed in my previous attempts to quit smoking, was possibly due to spending too much time with other people who smoked. I decided that in this new quest, I would attempt to stay away from other smokers as much as I could. This was not that easy as quite a lot of my friends are smokers. I had to be determined and make sacrifices. What I am attempting to do could have a very positive affect on my life, I therefore have to have the courage to do everything in my power that I think will help to lead to a successful conclusion.

Tip #1: Tell others when you will stop smoking.

If you tell other people when you will quit smoking, then you will will be more motivated and committed. Ensure that you are surrounded by people with positive attitudes who want to see you succeed.

You don’t want to tell every single person you know because some people may judge you and make you feel bad about your current situation. So, be selective as to which people you inform of your intention to stop smoking.

Tip #2: Find out your inner reason.

Spend some time thinking about the real reason that you want to quit smoking cigarettes. Initially, you may say that you want to quit just for health reasons. But don’t just stop there. Keep going deeper and finding a reason or two beyond your health.

Once you establish your own reason, you will have that clarity that you need in order to take the next step to achieve your goal. This deep rooted core reason will give you that extra motivation and fuel to whatever it takes to finally lose your smoking habit.

Tip #3: Carry a water bottle.

Every time you have an urge to smoke a cigarette, you need to divert your attention. A simple replacement is to drink water. Drinking water is healthy, cheap, and easy. In the beginning, this may seem difficult, but if you do it consistently, you will be able to form a new habit.

Tip #4: Hang out with non-smokers.

The main reason that people smoke is because the people they hang out with are smokers as well. So, you want to end this cycle. Start to hang out with people who don’t smoke. Spend more time with non-smokers than smokers. You will feel more pressure not to smoke when you are with your non-smoking friends.
