<p>I know you cannot quite believe why I am writing a blog on Leadership that references S-Club 7. But I think there is something valuable in their music. Well, that might be a hugely sweeping statement. I think there are some things interesting on one of their songs. However,  I am not on any royalities deal with them. Should you opt to go and buy their Greatest Hits CD, then I suggest you go ahead and buy it.</p>
<p>My child has a love of music encompassing all genres. Sadly , S-Club 7 appears in her ipod playlist. One song called &#8216;Reach &#8216;, appears to get a great deal of airtime.</p>
<p>The common theme in the track, therefore the clue in it&#8217;s title, is &#8216;Reach&#8217;: reach out, reach up and reach for the stars. It got me pondering how many leaders I see that really don&#8217;t really reach out.</p>
<p><b>Leadership: Making the connection</b></p>
<p>I learnt a good deal as an actor and frontman. I learnt many lessons that still sit with me today and are wrapped up in all my communication and relationships. One of them was about the necessity to &#8216;Reach&#8217; out. Theatre and performance is about making a story of possibility. A chance to invite the spectators to consider an alternative way of behaving, thinking and being. For this to translate from actor to audience, the actor has to reach out and connect to that person in some way: through movement and voice, dialogue, expression, eagerness and silence.</p>
<p>Doing this opens up our own truth as an actor and unlocks the truth that sits in the audience member. And so, a connection is created.</p>
<p>Leaders face an analogous challenge to actors &#8211; how do you invigorate your teams to entirely connect and engage with you? Now,more than before, organisations need to function as a whole unit. A place of partnership and connection. Each and every team member, should be able to  understand their own role in the story and the journey.</p>
<p><b>Leadership: Discover your own Reach</b></p>
<p>Naturally, you don&#039;t have to really like S-Club 7 to find your own &#8216;Reach&#8217;! You do however , need to find your own, authentic way of reaching out and connecting to those around you.</p>
<p>Know what the story is you need to tell, know how your audience want to hear it and then improvise, adapt and be agile. Constantly find ways to reach out and listen. Act on what you see, hear and feel.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Interesting question as a hypnotherapist practicing <a target="_blank" href="http://synergyhypnotherapymelbourne.com.au/">hypnotherapy</a> I have a different view on this than others may have.</p>
<p>First off allow me to say I practice it and it works for me! Saying that I&#8217;m an NLP Master Practitioner and Hypnotherapist so I do lots of work on my self in alternate ways to improve my life and positive thinking is only one facet of it.</p>
<p>When referring to my clients well I have got to say that positive thinking just doesn&#8217;t work the way that my clients have used it, allow me to explain. The clients I see have issues along the line of depression, anxiety, anger, loneliness, low self esteem and other stuff whatever reson why they come to see me for these make up the main parts of their problem.</p>
<p>Usually at some specific point in the past they have been introduced to positive thinking to help with their issues either by them-self or other health practitioners. The problem arises as they practice this they&#8217;ve still got the same issues as before and they&#8217;re still doing in their head what hey have always done to create the depression, anxiety for example. While the new positive thinking is a conscious effort the old issues are a unconscious process that has been going for decades usually.</p>
<p>So what I find occurs with them is they create a new trance or state on top of the old one, eventually it becomes unconscious process as well with time. A way to consider it is well imagine that we are similar to an onion and we have layers to us, the old issues are a handful of layers of the onion toward the middle while the new positive layer is a new layer of the onion on the outside that sits on top of all of the old stuff.</p>
<p>So when I see clients I&#8217;ll ask them stuff like how do you feel about the past, future, your spouse, children , parents, and yourself to name one or two. Remembering they came for an issue that&#8217;s causing them a lot of discomfort. They will say things like, I&#8217;m happy, everything is good, my relationship is great. As they say these answers I can see they are lying not at a conscious level because consciously they sort of believe this, its like they&#8217;ve a split personality when they give positive answers this is due to the fact that that&#8217;s what you should think and say on one hand! While from the other perspective at the exact same time they know they&#8217;re sad, they are effectively in 2 minds. We all pick up on this all of the time when some one tells us something and we don&#8217;t believe it, they&#8217;re saying one thing consciously while at the very same time they&#8217;re saying unconsciously through body language something else. This is what I am picking up on when they&#8217;re lying to me.</p>
<p>In this situation the positive thinking doesn&#8217;t work as it creates ambiguity! From one perspective the Client is unhappy and on the other they&#8217;re saying they&#8217;re not and it complicates the action of helping them. I want to know how they feel about their life, so I know exactly what we need to address so I&#8217;m able to help them but they on one had say they are depressed and then on the other answer all the other questions as if they don&#8217;t have any issues while at a unconscious level they&#8217;re sending a totally different message.</p>
<p>Now what I suspect these clients are doing is using the positive thinking in a way to try to hide from their issues, like clients use drugs, alcohol, food for example. Also a main part to positive thinking is you&#8217;ve got to manifest positive feelings with the thoughts!! If you don&#8217;t well it will never works irrespective of how much you do it! At last positive thinking needs to lead directly to positive feelings. I think that&#8217;s the thing they do when they&#8217;re using positive thinking they&#8217;re manifesting depression, anxiety, or negative feelings with the thoughts rather than positive feelings.</p>
<p>Another component of this is I think they also must do the work to release all of the self-destructive thoughts, principles and especially emotions they have stored in their body/mind. Once this is done I think positive thinking can work, because they will then be in a position to manifest positive feelings to go with the practice. As for people who are not suffering from any real destructive feelings impacting their life, I haven&#8217;t any idea how it operates for them. Though I&#8217;ll guess that if they manifest positive feelings in the process then it should work for them also. I&#8217;ve only truly addressed issues I have found with my clients.</p>
<p>So I think that positive thinking generally does not work for the great majority of people and can be a waste of time. The reason Why I say this Is often because most people don&#8217;t know the way to do positive thinking and they don&#8217;t have any real guidance on the way to use it. Most of the people I know who&#8217;ve recommended this as a practice to my clients don&#8217;t practice it them self, so what does this say for the practice of positive thinking?</p>
