By now, most musicians know that the key to making it in the music business is creating great songs. Even if you don’t really want to make it in the music business, if your very first priority is not to acquire commercial success as a musician but to play and write your music for your very own sake and no 1 elses, you still wish to create great songs. Everybody does.
The real question is how do I write amazing songs? If it’s such a necessity, then there has to be some cut-and-dry strategy I can pick up that I’ll simply start pumping them out like a busted fire hydrant, right? Well, there isn’t. Sorry to be the barer of bad news. There are a lot of places you can look for aid, sure. There are books all about songwriting, on-line suggestions and approaches—even merely listening to a whole heap of music can help. But verse, chorus, verse, chorus, bridge, chorus, repeat is only going to get you so far in the long run.
If you haven’t guessed by now, I don’t have any concrete answers for you, due to the fact there aren’t any. If I can offer you any guidance, it’s that you need to stop attempting to be a songwriter and begin living like one. Forcing your self to write can be a painstaking procedure and can head to disappointment and even resentment of what you’re trying so hard to work on. As a songwriter myself, I can’t inform you how many instances a track I began ended up as nothing more than a scrap of paper in a wastebasket or a 30 second audio clip on a tape recorder.
Great songs come from natural songwriting, so like I stated, stop TRYING to be a songwriter and begin LIVING like one. Have songwriting continuously be a presence in the back of your mind. Listen for lyrics and rhythms in the world around you. Don’t be frightened to eavesdrop on conversations in public places—as an artist, that’s your god-given right. When you have the day off, don’t even flip your Television on for even half of the afternoon and just sit with your guitar and a pen and paper. Practice your music on a regular basis, and attempt to make those practices be at minimum a couple of hours long.
The more prominent songwriting is in your day-to-day life – the more habitual it gets on a typical basis—obviously, the more you’re going to write. The more you create, the better your writing is going to get as time goes on. But you can’t anticipate things to simply get better overnight. It’s merely like working out to get in shape: the more you use those muscles over time, the more powerful they’re going to turn out to be. So keep at it, don’t let writer’s block get you down, and just remember, a whole lot of hard work can certainly go a long way.
